TheRide and Ann Arbor Public Schools partner to provide bus service

TheRide to replace three AAPS high school bus routes

ANN ARBOR – The Ann Arbor Transportation Authority (TheRide) and Ann Arbor Public Schools (AAPS) today announced a new initiative that will replace three high school bus routes with TheRide routes starting in the 2012-2013 school year.

“TheRide has consistently demonstrated it can provide a safe and efficient public transportation system. By partnering with them to serve students along three routes we will save thousands per year that can be redirected back into classrooms,” said Dr. Patricia Green, superintendent of Ann Arbor Public Schools. “And not only will we save costs, it also brings more options for high school students with at least two morning trips available to school and multiple afternoon trips that these students can access for their ride home.”

TheRide’s three routes that will now serve AAPS students beginning in the fall are Route #16, Ann Arbor-Saline Road for Pioneer High School; Route #18, Miller – University for Skyline High School; and Route #22, North-South Connector for Huron High School (view service detail). Currently, the average cost of a bus route for AAPS is approximately $15,000 per bus per year. Any savings will be adjusted for the cost of the trips per student.

The change in service will result in convenient bus stops for students, improved access to and from school. Students that will be served by the above routes will receive a bus pass, paid for by AAPS, valid on TheRide’s regular direct route service Monday through Friday throughout the school year.

Michael Ford, CEO of TheRide, said, “The AAPS partnership is one more example of TheRide’s commitment to providing relevant and efficient services in Ann Arbor and continuing to be responsive to the needs of our entire community.”
