Riding Tips

The Ann Arbor Transportation Authority offers these tips for making your bus ride safer, easier and more enjoyable:

  • Wait at the bus shelter or bus stop sign. If there is ice or snow at the bus stop, wait at the nearest area that has been cleared, such as a driveway.
  • Before boarding, check the route number and destination displayed on the outside of the bus. On some streets, more than one route may be running, so be sure to check the bus, or ask the driver.
  • When waiting at a bus stop that is served by more than one route, signal to the driver that you want that route by making eye contact with the driver or raising an arm without waving.
  • If you do not want a particular bus, step back and wave the bus on so that the driver can proceed without stopping.
  • Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop to board.
  • Have your fare, pass, or identification card ready when you board.
  • Use U.S. currency only, or AATA tokens; $1, $2, $5 and $10 bills or coins are accepted. Change cards will be issued for change amounts of 25 cents or more.
  • Board at the front door.
  • All AATA buses are low-floor, accessible vehicles, meaning that there are no steps to climb and the bus has a ramp. AATA buses can “kneel” down to lower your step. If you need to use any of these aids, ask the driver for assistance.
  • If you are traveling with a child in a stroller, the stroller must be folded before boarding unless the designated stroller area is available.
  • Transfers are free; ask the driver for a transfer when boarding.
  • Be seated; seats at the front of the bus are for seniors and people with disabilities. Please be prepared to give up your seat, as needed.
  • Properly leashed or harnessed service animals are permitted. No animals or birds other than domesticated pets are allowed. Pets must be secured in closed containers and held in your lap.
  • Keep personal items in your lap or at your feet.
  • Remember to take your personal items with you when you exit the bus.
  • No eating, drinking or smoking is permitted on the bus.
  • No radio playing, cell phone speaker or two-way radio use is allowed on the bus.
  • Use the pull cord along the windows to signal that you want to stop at the next bus stop.
  • Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop to exit.
  • Exit from the rear door.
  • Enjoy TheRide!
